In the US, there are an estimated 500,000 predators online daily, and FBI figures show that 50% of victims of online sexual exploitation are between 12 and 15 years old. 

Since 2020, our investigators have seen a steep rise in the number of online grooming cases linked to human trafficking and exploitation. 

Last year alone, 39 out of 44 teenage girls (89%) in one of our Lighthouses were first groomed and recruited online through their phones before they were trafficked in-person. 

Grooming is when a perpetrator befriends a child to gain their trust and then lures or coerces them into sending sexual images or videos of themselves, which are then shared online or used as a form of blackmail, leading to even more exploitative situations. 

But it doesn’t have to be like this. Hope for Justice trains parents, teachers, and youth workers on how to spot the signs of online exploitation – so that we can intervene to disrupt the traffickers and protect children from these dangers.
